The British Library’s collection of Arabic manuscripts is justly world-famous. It is one of the largest such collections in Europe and North America, comprising almost 15,000 works. It is also renowned for the importance of many individual items, from some of the finest calligraphic and illuminated manuscripts of the holy Qur’an to autograph and other high-quality copies of major legal, historical, literary and scientific works. It is equally impressive in terms of the wide subject scope covered; The Holy Qur’an, Quar’anic sciences and commentaries, Hadith, Kalam, Islamic jurisprudence, mysticism and philosophy, Arabic grammar and philology, dictonaries, poetry and other literary genres, history, topography and biography, music and other arts, sciences and medecine, texts relating to Druze, Bahais and miscellania including magic, archery, falconry and the interpretation of dreams.
