The World Council of Churches (WCC) is the broadest and most inclusive among the many organized expressions of the modern ecumenical movement, whose goal is Christian unity. The WCC brings together more than 340 churches, denominations and church fellowships in over 100 countries and territories throughout the world, representing some 400 million Christians and including most of the world's Orthodox churches, scores of denominations from such historic traditions of the Protestant Reformation as Anglican, Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist and Reformed, as well as many united and independent churches. While the bulk of the WCC's founding churches were European and North American, today most are in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, the Middle East and the Pacific.
In 1968, the WCC Central Committee created a Programme to Combat Racism (PCR). The main aim of the PCR is to define, propose and carry out ecumenical policies and programs that substantially contribute to the liberation of the victims of racism. Although it attempted to deal with racism as a world-wide problem, much of its attention and energy during the apartheid era was focused on Southern Africa. One of PCR's most effective tools has been a WCC special fund to combat racism, from which annual grants are made to racially oppressed groups and
organizations supporting the victims of racism. The fund is supplied by voluntary contributions from churches as well as from local ecumenical and support groups all over the world.
The work of the PCR has evolved greatly since 1968, yet racism remains an issue that divides local communities and even families. In 1995, the WCC Central Committee noted that: "Institutional racism and the ideology of racism, in their most pernicious forms, continue unabated in contemporary societies and still affect churches dramatically while ongoing social, political and economic trends are producing new forms of racism."
WCC's work on racism aims to engage and accompany the churches to recognize, understand and attempt to overcome racism wherever it exists in their midst as a central part of their life rather than something marginal, dealt with in semi-detached programs and committees. the eighth assembly of the WCC in Harare celebrated the 30th Anniversary of PCR in 1998.
This collection brings together the reports, general correspondence, papers, news clippings, trial reports, personal reflections, information on finance (grant proposals) and country files which have been collected in the World Council of Churches Archives in Geneva. The collection has been organized in files, and duplicates have been removed.
