The initial volume, although now considerably dated, with an extensive history of the MS Division to 1938 provides a relatively comprehensive survey of fonds acquired between 1917 and 1938. The first part—covering medieval Slavic manuscripts—briefly describes 8 major collections from prerevolutionary religious institutions and antiquarian societies, 13 private collections, and several other special collections. The second part—covering archival fonds—briefly describes archival materials acquired from 13 societies and organizations, 5 literary organizations, and 120 individuals. Other sections cover Greek, Western, and Oriental manuscripts. A complete index covers proper names of individuals and organizations. See also the survey article covering accessions during the years 1917–1941 in Trudy GPB 8(11) (1960): 267–87. Supplemental coverage of new accessions is provided in later reports as indicated.
