Biographical note
Johann Heinrich Hottinger (1620-1667) was a Swiss scholar of the 17th century. Born in Zürich, he studied briefly in France and in the Netherlands and then became Professor of Ecclesiastical History, the Old Testament and Oriental Studies at the Zürich School of Theology, the so-called Carolinum. He held the same post at the Theological Faculty of the University of Heidelberg from 1655 to 1661. During his Heidelberg years, he became rector of the University (1656) and later dean of its Theological Faculty, and was also head of the Collegium Sapientiae. All three positions enabled him to play a major role in the reconstruction of the University and, in the special service of Elector Karl Ludwig von der Pfalz, in the efforts of John Durie to bring a union about between the Lutheran and the Reformed Churches.
